Currently, my clinical practice is limited to the Oral Medicine Clinical Service at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. There, with licensed psychologist Lisa J. Heaton, PhD, I provide clinical psychology services in an integrated dental clinic specializing in the care of patients suffering from conditions whose management may fall between dentistry and medicine. For more information and to make an appointment, visit the Oral Medicine Clinic's homepage.
I am a clinical health psychologist with interest and expertise in: (a) the management of acute pain and the treatment of chronic pain, especially orofacial pain; (b) the treatment of medical and dental care-related fears and pain-related fears; (c) psychosocial functioning and health behavior change related to complex craniofacial, dental, and/or oral medicine presentation; (d) the treatment of anxiety disorders, particularly when health- or pain-related complicating factors are present; and (e) brief assessment and treatment of mood, anxiety, and adjustment disorders in integrated dental, primary care, or hospital settings, specifically for in- and outpatients with chronic health problems and as related to health behavior change. Appreciation of diversity and cultural influences – and advanced training in Motivational Interviewing and behavioral and contextual approaches to health psychology – inform case conceptualization and treatment. I am committed to promoting the integration of mental and other health care.
I have clinical experience in assessment and intervention across a range of psychopathology, with specialized training in the treatment of anxiety disorders and pain, and in the integration of clinical psychology and medicine in healthcare settings. I have worked primarily in hospital or medical settings, including in intensive care, cardiology, oncology, burns, infectious disease, rehabilitation medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, psychiatry, and dentistry. I completed my predoctoral internship in clinical psychology as a resident in behavioral medicine and neuropsychology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where I worked at Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center.
